Mad for a Reason: The Need for Proactive Security Technology

The Need for Proactive Security Technology

When is Enough - Enough?

Moms across the country are fed up with the shoddy systems put in place to “protect” their kids.

Small towns in America’s heartland are but microcosms of the nationwide rage that parents are feeling in the wake of the increasing likelihood of a school shooting in their area.

The violence hasn’t stopped after Columbine. It hasn’t stopped after Sandy Hook. It hasn’t stopped after Uvalde. School shootings continue to occur and impact our elementary and high school students, growing in frequency and intensity.

“You can no longer lie to yourself, and tell yourself, it’s not going to happen in my community, because it’s happening everywhere, and nobody knows when, or how, just that it keeps going on,” Jamie Svoboda, a mother of three from the small town of Savannah, MO, told her local news channel, KQ2.

In the wake of the March 2023 school shooting in Nashville, Svoboda decided she couldn’t stand by idly as active shooters continued to attack our nation’s schools. She formed the Facebook group Mad Moms in Minivans to rally her community into action. Many others share her sentiment – it didn’t take long for more than 100 people in her town of 5,000 to join.

“It’s anxiety-inducing and panic-provoking just knowing something terrible could happen,” Svoboda told KQ2. Her first solution was to assemble a group of “Parents on Patrol”–volunteers who would take a few minutes each day to patrol all the campuses in the school district, keeping watch for suspicious activity. “An extra pair of eyes in the right place at the right time could make all the difference,” one of her fliers reads.

What’s more shocking is that mothers nationwide find themselves in a state of fear and anxiety. They are so desperate that they feel they need to take matters into their own hands. They believe that no help is coming.

Further, they are adamant that the institutions and infrastructures put in place to protect their children are lazy and inadequate – woefully lacking in effectiveness and openly leaving their children and loved ones unprotected. Throughout the country, school districts do not have effective security systems in place to prevent, monitor, and respond to emergencies. They cannot keep their students safe and empower law enforcement to allay parents’ fears.

Does this sound like your school district?

“School leaders, administrators, and board members have been showing overwhelming support of this effort,” the KQ2 anchor said when wrapping Svoboda’s story…

Isn't This Backwards?

Whether a child attends a public school or a private school, administrators need to be the ones taking action to counter this real and perpetual threat of violence. It is their burden and responsibility to ensure the safety and security of our friends, coworkers, and families.
