Hospital workplace violence impacts staff productivity, recruitment/retention, and quality of patient care. The highest number of hospital assaults occurred in psychiatric units, emergency departments, rehab, and pediatrics. The majority of assailants are male patients, with family members, co-workers, visitors, and intruders also perpetrating violence. The exception to this is pediatric and rehab units, where females are more likely than males to perpetrate violence.

Addressing hospital security challenges requires a multi-disciplinary, multi-pronged approach that includes strategies, tactics, resources, and new technologies.
